About UsOur NamesakeGunrock is a very important name in the history of University of California, Davis. In the 1920's, the efforts of choosing a school mascot led many University Farm students to consider their agricultural and veterinary school roots. Eventually, they chose the glorious mustang... a strong-willed, enduring, intelligent beast exhibiting exactly one horsepower of strapping vigor. In the 1920's, UC Davis was used as a breeding facility for supplying high-quality stock thoroughbreds for the United States Army Cavalry. Around this time, a thoroughbred named Gunrock was brought to the campus for the Army breeding program. In honor of this handsome creature, the students of the 20's chose Gunrock as the name for the official school mascot, which was re-affirmed by the UCD community in 2003. Our FacilityGunrock Pub is located in the historic Silo Union building. The Silo Union occupies a turn of the century dairy barn, one of the first, and few remaining, original structures of the University Farm. The building has served many functions over the last century. In addition to having been a dairy barn, it also functioned as a resident dinning hall and now serves as a student union featuring a food court, meeting spaces, and of course, the Gunrock Pub, formerly the Silo Café and Pub. Much of the original architecture has been preserved. Our Partners
